Why Zoning Makes a Difference

Traditional HVAC systems treat your home as a single space, often leading to hot and cold spots throughout different rooms. Zoning systems solve this problem by dividing your home into separate areas, each with its own temperature control.

This approach not only improves comfort but also reduces unnecessary energy use. By only heating or cooling the spaces you’re using, you can improve efficiency and reduce strain on your system during peak seasons.

Beacon Home Services was called out today for a heat pump that was not producing cold air. Upon inspection, I found that the home has two thermostats, but only the upstairs thermostat is currently in use. The downstairs thermostat has been disconnected from the zoning system. Further inspection in the attic revealed a two-zone control board and two zone dampers. The upstairs thermostat is connected to the zone board, while the downstairs zone is not currently connected. At the outdoor heat pump, I found that the run capacitor had failed. The system uses one 20x20x1 air filter and one 12x12x1 air filter. I checked the refrigerant pressures and temperatures and verified that the refrigerant charge is correct. After replacing the failed capacitor, I confirmed the system starts and stops properly from the upstairs thermostat and is cooling the home correctly. I have provided options to properly reconnect and configure the zoning system so both thermostats and dampers operate as designed. With only one zone controlling the entire home, the heat pump is required to run longer and work harder to satisfy the homes heating and cooling demands. Restoring proper zoning will improve comfort, balance airflow between floors, reduce unnecessary runtime, and help minimize wear on components such as the outdoor run capacitor.
